Advanced Watercolor-   Thursdays 12:30-2:30

Materials:

Good quality materials make the watercolorist’s job so much easier! At the minimum have a few paint colors, some paper and a couple brushes of varying sizes for the first class. Listed below are materials that I have found useful in my own painting experience.  Blick Art offers good online prices for painting supplies (dickblick.com). ACMoore and Michaels carry a limited selection as well but remember to always use a 50% off coupon when purchasing supplies at these stores!

Paints – any colors, brands in tubes – professional quality recommended. My basic palette is based primarily on Winsor and Newton colors, with a few Holbein and Daniel Smith paints mixed in. A warm and cool yellow (such as cadmium yellow and Winsor lemon), warm and cool red (cadmium red and permanent rose or permanent alizarin crimson) and warm and cool blue (French ultramarine and cobalt blue) are good colors to start with. Other colors I have:  cadmium orange, yellow ochre, cerulean Winsor violet, burnt sienna, burnt umber, cerulean blue, viridian, oxide or chromium (green), mars black, titanium white.

Paper – rough or cold-pressed, at least 140Lb (300gm). Block paper or single sheets.  Professional quality such as Arches, Fabriano and Winsor & Newton – whatever has worked for you.  Size – at least 12” x 16” but if you want to work larger, that will be encouraged as well.  If using single sheets, bring a board and masking (or artist) tape to affix the paper to a solid surface.

Brushes – synthetic or natural hair – your choice.  I use synthetic rounds such as Escoda Ultimo or Versatil and Princeton Neptune. Have a least one large (#20) and one small (#6) on hand.

Synthetic or natural hair mop brushes (#6 or #8).

A flat ¾” synthetic brush is good for washes and scrubbing.

A thin liner or rigger is useful for making thin lines.

Bring a sketchbook or drawing pad for thumbnail sketches and small studies. Pencil, pen, eraser, charcoal, watercolor graphite/crayons/pencils/markers, etc. – whatever you like to use.

Bring a container for washing brushes, paper towels, chamois cloth or sponge for blotting and a hairdryer if you have one.

Other materials to consider: masking fluid, salt, old toothbrush, tissue paper, color chart, viewfinder, value finder, ruler.
