Drawing with Soft Pastels

Instructor Mireille Duchesne

Soft Pastel is a beautiful and tactile medium.  In this class, you will learn how to blend and render texture, how to compose a painting, and how to use light and dark to apply layers on layers of paint to obtain a luxurious, incredibly colorful painting.  Each student can work on their own subject matter and will receive individual instruction tailored to their own experience.  It is for all levels from beginner to advanced students.

Beginner/Intermediate Painting

In this painting class, students will be guided through various steps and techniques to build a painting. Paintings will be completed in few sittings allowing students to explore the advantages of this approach. This direct way of painting encourages artists to be decisive about their painting and to be spontaneous.

Fundamentals of Drawing

Instructor Maria Kaprielian

Good draftsmanship is the key to realistic drawings and if you can’t draw well, your paintings won’t look right! In this class for the beginner and intermediate artist we’ll cover the basic skills needed to create a finished drawing or the underlying sketch for a realistic painting.  Instruction will emphasize light and shadow, contour mapping, tonal value, perspective and scale.  Compositional elements such as focal point and editing will also be addressed, all in a relaxing, collegial atmosphere.

Portrait Class

Instructor Kinga Witkor

Lessons will focus on learning techniques to create realistic and expressive portraits. Using any medium you wish to work with, students will master their skills and find all the answers they are looking for. We will work in proportions, shading to achieve 3-dimension, color and composition. Class will provide all the fundamentals for an art portrait that addresses all levels from the beginner to the advanced artist.

Beginner Watercolor

This is a class for the true beginner!  We’ll cover the basics of the medium: what materials to use and the many ways to apply paint to paper to achieve the luminous washes and interesting brushwork that make watercolor paintings so appealing. Color theory, composition and the elements of good draftsmanship will also be addressed.  If you’ve always wanted to learn watercolor but have been too intimidated to try, this is the class for you!

Advanced Watercolor

Instructor Maria Kaprielian

So you’ve played with watercolors for a bit – now what? This class will concentrate on the individual watercolorist’s continuing journey in the medium, reviewing techniques such as the right water-to-paint ratio to get the hard and soft edges you’ve been looking for.  From fast-and-loose to a more controlled approach, we’ll explore how to “design” a painting, addressing composition, focal point, tonal variation and color theory as necessary to create a successful work.  The use of additional materials such masking fluid, salt, watercolor crayons/pencils and gouache will be encouraged.

Painting & Drawing, All Levels-All Mediums

There are many approaches to painting. The fundamentals or “elements” of art are a collection of foundational groundwork to take from in order to create the right approach for you. Various painting approaches and techniques will be covered in this all-levels class and each student will be individually instructed.  This is the perfect class for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of painting to the more experienced painter who needs guidance and the expertise of the teacher.

 Intermediate Acrylic Painting

Instructor Kinga Witkor

This is a great class for students that have taken a painting class in the past! In our Intermediate Acrylic Painting course, students will learn how to use acrylic technique to its perfection. Students will have opportunity to expand their horizon by exercising their painting skills while organizing knowledge and building on experience they already possess. Lessons will focus on all the skills needed in the realistic approach including light and shadow, understanding temperature and complicity of color, rules of proper perspective and importance of composition.

Private Art Lessons

These sessions will use a wide variety of art materials to create unique pieces of art. Materials can include paint, pastels, watercolor, cut paper, found objects, handmade paper, and recycle material. Call 914-617-8541 or email info@railyardarts.com to schedule a lesson.

Fee: From $75.00 to $125 per one hour session depending on the instructor and materials used.
