A word about quality: better quality materials cost more. Professional quality materials are easier to use than student grade. That being said, you have to decide what fits your budget.
Paints (in tubes): Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Sennelier and Van Gogh are all good brands.
Have at least a warm and cool yellow, warm and cool red, and warm and cool blue color to start. Daniel Smith makes a good beginner pack with these 6 different colors.
Watercolor palette with deep wells and large mixing areas
Paper: cold-pressed, at least 140Lb (300gsm) = Strathmore, Arches, Fabiano or Canson in pads, blocks or single sheets
Brushes: synthetic or natural hair
3/4 inch flat brush
#6 and #12 round brush
#4 rigger brush
Other:

Advanced Watercolor- Thursdays 12:30-2:30 – Instructor Maria Kaprielian
Good quality materials make the watercolorist’s job so much easier! At the minimum: have a few paint colors, some paper and a couple brushes of varying sizes for the first class. Listed below are materials that I have found useful in my own painting experience. Blick Art offers good online prices for painting supplies (dickblick.com). Michaels carries a limited selection as well but use the coupon from the weekly circular when purchasing supplies there.
Paints: any colors, brands in tubes – professional quality recommended. I use Winsor and Newton paints, with a few Holbein and Daniel Smith colors mixed in. A warm and cool yellow (such as cadmium yellow and Winsor lemon), warm and cool red (cadmium red and permanent rose or permanent alizarin crimson) and warm and cool blue (French ultramarine and pthalo or Prussian blue) are good colors to start with. I also have the following in my palette: cobalt blue, cadmium yellow light, cadmium orange, quinacridone gold, burnt sienna, burnt umber, viridian, sap green, cerulean blue, lavender, Winsor purple.
Palette: any kind, but choose one with deep wells to store paints, one or more large mixing areas and a cover.
Paper: rough or cold-pressed, at least 140Lb (300gm), block paper or single sheets. Professional quality such as Arches, Fabriano and Winsor & Newton – whatever has worked for you.
*Size – at least 12” x 16” If using single sheets, bring a board and masking (or artist) tape to affix the paper to a solid surface.
Brushes: synthetic or natural hair – your choice. I use synthetic rounds such as Escoda Ultimo or Versatil and Princeton Neptune.
3/4 inch flat brush
#6 and #12 round brush
#4 rigger brush
Sketchbook or drawing pad for thumbnail sketches and small studies. Pencil, pen, eraser
Bring 2 containers for washing brushes, paper towels or facial tissues for blotting and a hairdryer if you have one.
Other materials to consider: masking fluid, salt, old toothbrush, tissue paper, color chart, viewfinder, value finder, ruler.
